Gresik – Islamic Holy Cities and Bawean Island in East Java
Gresik Regency lies on the northern coast of East Java province, directly le long deside Surabaya. La capitale régionale est Gresik city. Gresik is one of Indonesia's most important Islamic pilgrimage sites: two of the Wali Songo (nine Islamic saints), Sunan Giri and Sunan Gresik (Maulana Malik Ibrahim), rest here. The region is également connu pour the tropical beauty of Bawean Island.
Attractions et activités
Sunan Giri's shrine (Makam Sunan Giri) stands on a hill above Gresik – an important pilgrimage site and former centre of Javanese Islamic propagation. Maulana Malik Ibrahim's shrine (Makam Sunan Gresik) is one of Indonesia's oldest Islamic monuments. Bawean Island (Pulau Bawean) lies in la mer de Java, approximately 4 hours by ferry – white sand plages, the Bawean deer (Axis kuhlii – an endemic species), préservé récifs coralliens and Danau Kastoba crater lake. The Gresik industrial history musée presents the cement and industrial heritage.

Gresik is a deeply religious Javanese town – Islamic pilgrimage (ziarah) is part of vie quotidienne. The Wali Songo pilgrimage draws believers depuis across Java. The cuisine is Javanese-Madurese: otak-otak (grilled fish paste in banana leaf), nasi krawu (rice with spiced dried beef floss), and bandeng asap (smoked milkfish) are local favourites.
