Sukakerti – rural settlement in Cisalak District, Subang Regency
Sukakerti is one of the settlements in Cisalak kecamatan (district) in Subang Regency, located in Jawa Barat (West Java) province on Java island, Indonesia. The settlement is situated in the southeastern part of the regency and belongs to the typical rural settlements of West Java inhabited by the Sundanese people. Subang Regency had approximately 1.7 million inhabitants in mid-2025, and several of Java's most important road networks and economic corridors pass through the administrative unit. However, Sukakerti as a settlement is located on the periphery of the regency and functions primarily as a local, agriculture-based community.
General overview
Sukakerti belongs to Cisalak District, one of the 30 kecamatan (districts) of Subang Regency. The entire regency is known as a Sundanese-populated rural area where the Sundanese language and culture form the primary framework for communication and society. The settlement and its immediate surroundings are not considered a typical tourist destination and do not feature prominently in Indonesian administrative literature among leading settlements or attraction centers. According to Subang Regency's administrative structure, the area is divided into 30 kecamatan and 245 desa, as well as 8 kelurahan, making Sukakerti one of the hundreds of settlements that constitute this region's relatively dispersed residential structure. Cisalak District represents the eastern and southeastern rural areas of the regency, which are traditionally less urbanized and characterized by the primary economy (agriculture, small-scale production).
The population's ethnicity and linguistic practice are consistent with the general demographic characteristics of Subang Regency. The regency remains predominantly Sundanese, where Sundanese is the language of daily communication. However, certain kecamatan (such as the coastal Ciasem and Pamanukan) are also linked to the use of Madurese language, which is the characteristic linguistic feature of the border region toward Indramayu Regency. Sukakerti as a settlement in Cisalak District likely operates within Sundanese dominance, although settlement-level data on language use or ethnic composition is not available. Such rural settlements are typically structured communities where family and community ties form the fabric of life, and formal administration extends from the regency level.
Real estate and investment
Sukakerti as a rural, administratively subordinate settlement level does not have an autonomous real estate market or investment infrastructure. In such settlements, land and property ownership has traditionally been divided on the basis of community, family, and informal networks, and formal housing market transactions are rare. However, the real estate market of Subang Regency as a whole has been one of the significant sectors of Indonesian urbanization and infrastructure development over the past two decades. The regency is crossed by the Pantura (Pantai Utara, North Coast) highway and the Trans-Java tollway (specifically the Cikopo–Palimanan section, Cipali), which forms an important logistics corridor connected to Jakarta, Bandung, and Surabaya. This infrastructure primarily generates higher real estate and development demand in coastal kecamatan and those toward Indramayu (Ciasem, Pamanukan).
Cisalak District, however, is not directly reached by the Pantura or Cipali tollway, so real estate market activity here is considerably more modest. The southern parts of Subang Regency (where Sukakerti is located) are more connected to the alternative Sadang–Cikamurang route, which leads toward Purwakarta and also plays a role in tourism (thermal waters, toward the Tangkuban Prahu volcano). Nevertheless, at the Sukakerti level, the possibility of consumer property purchases or major investment projects remains reasonably limited. Under Indonesian law, property ownership rights for foreign nationals acquiring real estate in Indonesia are strictly limited – land ownership is almost entirely restricted to Indonesians, and foreigners can only acquire at most 30-year usufruct rights. In a rural setting with no formal commercial infrastructure, this possibility becomes virtually irrelevant. The local economy is based on agriculture, fishing, and small handicrafts, and real estate investment is not considered a driver of the region's economy.
Safety and security
No publicly available security or public order data exists at the Sukakerti settlement level. However, in Subang Regency as a whole, Indonesian rural norms apply: major urban crime issues (violent theft, organized crime) are rarer, but petty larceny and minor property crimes do occur. Rural communities traditionally rely on strict social control and family/community accountability, which reinforces public safety. The presence of the Indonesian National Police (Kepolisian Negara Republik Indonesia, Polri), however, is limited in rural areas and concentrates primarily around district centers (Cisalak town) and the regency capital (Subang Kota).
The general public order of Subang Regency is not considered a major concern in Indonesian domestic security discourse. However, the regency is located on the Trans-Java tollway and Pantura corridors, which are active with international and domestic freight transport and where the organized crime typical of such transportation routes (cargo robbery, driver conflicts) is documented. Cisalak District's rural position means it is not directly affected by these traffic dynamics. For the average traveler or resident, the area represents typical Indonesian rural circumstances in terms of public safety: restrained security but an absence of urban-level crime threats. It is advisable to avoid nighttime travel and follow local instructions.
Tourist attractions
Sukakerti settlement similarly has no documented named tourist attractions. However, Subang Regency has numerous tourist attractions in various parts of the regency. The southern and southeastern rural areas of the regency, which can follow the trace of the alternative Sadang–Cikamurang route and travel toward Bandung, do connect to the segment of Indonesian tourism that focuses on discovering geothermal and volcanic natural resources. Within the regency's jurisdiction (and in several kecamatan), the Ciater hot springs waterfront is a typical attraction, which does not characterize areas directly toward Indramayu but is a well-known rest spot in the western part of the regency and on the Bandung–Subang corridor. Similarly, the Tangkuban Prahu volcano – located in Bandung Regency and accessible from the Bandung–Subang transport route – also makes the regency's southern border areas interesting.
Cisalak District, in view of its rural, agricultural characteristics, is considered to have no tourist potential beyond agriculture. The area retains its agricultural landscape and traditional community structure character, so those wishing to observe the authentic, slow daily life of rural Java can find it in such settings. At the settlement level, however, no significant tourist infrastructure or directed attractions operate. The value of any Indonesian rural community can be represented by anthropological interest, community tourism, or agritourism opportunities, which, however, have not yet been formalized at the Sukakerti level. At the level of nearby Subang Kota and Cisalak District seat, elementary administrative and commercial functions (markets, schools, administrative offices) are found.
Summary
Sukakerti is a rural settlement in Cisalak District within Subang Regency, West Java. The area is not considered a tourist destination and is similarly peripheral in the real estate or investment segment. Essentially functioning as an agriculture and community-based settlement, it characterizes one aspect of Indonesian rural reality. However, the infrastructural development of Subang Regency as a whole and the economic corridor extending toward Bandung are gradually integrating the regency's rural areas into more modern Indonesian territorial management, so long-term development trends cannot be ruled out.
