Malinau – Kayan Mentarang National Park and Borneo’s Wilderness
Malinau Regency lies in the interior of North Kalimantan province, along the Malinau River. Its capital is Malinau city. The region neighbours Kayan Mentarang National Park (1.36 million hectares) – one of Borneo’s largest pristine rainforest areas.
Attractions and Activities
Kayan Mentarang National Park is home to endemic species: Bornean clouded leopard, sun bear, rare bird species. Dayak Kenyah and Dayak Lundaye communities live in traditional longhouses: carved decorations, hudoq dances, authentic cultural experiences. Boat expeditions along the Malinau River into the rainforest can be arranged. Long Alango and interior Dayak villages are remote but stunning destinations.
Culture and Cuisine
Dayak Kenyah and Lundaye culture is defining: longhouse communal life, the mandau (Dayak sword) and traditional ceremonies are part of daily life. Cuisine is Dayak: lemang (rice cooked in bamboo), freshwater fish, pansoh (meat cooked in bamboo), and locally foraged vegetables.
Public Safety
Malinau is a remote and isolated region. Travel only with a local guide. Infrastructure is minimal. Medical care: puskesmas in Malinau city; Tarakan (by air) is the nearest hospital.
Practical Information
Small aircraft from Tarakan to Malinau Airport (approx. 45 minutes). The best time to visit is May to September. Accommodation: simple guesthouses in Malinau city; local hospitality in Dayak villages.
