Maluku Tenggara – Crystal-Clear Beaches of the Kei Islands
Maluku Tenggara Regency lies in the southeastern part of Maluku province, on the Kei Islands (Kei Kecil and Kei Besar). Its capital is Langgur (Kei Kecil). The region is home to some of Indonesia’s most beautiful yet least-known beach areas.
Attractions and Activities
Pantai Ngurbloat (Pasir Panjang) on Kei Kecil Island – one of the finest white-sand beaches in Indonesia and perhaps the world, with crystal-clear turquoise water. Pantai Ohoidertawun is a rocky coastline with natural rock pools. Kei Besar Island’s mountainous landscape and traditional villages offer authentic experiences. Coral reefs are excellent for diving and snorkelling – pristine underwater world.
Culture and Cuisine
The Kei Islands’ distinctive culture blends Melanesian and Malay elements: larvul ngabal (customary law) forms the basis of community life. Cuisine is Maluku: ikan bakar, papeda, enbal (cassava processing), and coconut-based dishes.
Public Safety
Maluku Tenggara is a safe region. Watch for currents at beaches. Medical care: basic hospital in Langgur; Ambon (approx. 1.5 hours by air) has more advanced facilities.
Practical Information
From Ambon Pattimura Airport to Langgur Karel Sadsuitubun Airport, approximately 1.5 hours. The best time to visit is October to April. Accommodation: guesthouses and simple hotels in Langgur and Tual city.
