Maluku Tenggara – Crystal-Clear Beaches of the Kei Islands

Maluku Tenggara Regency lies in the southeastern part of Maluku province, on the Kei Islands (Kei Kecil and Kei Besar). Its capital is Langgur (Kei Kecil). The region is home to some of Indonesia’s most beautiful yet least-known beach areas.

    Attractions and Activities

Pantai Ngurbloat (Pasir Panjang) on Kei Kecil Island – one of the finest white-sand beaches in Indonesia and perhaps the world, with crystal-clear turquoise water. Pantai Ohoidertawun is a rocky coastline with natural rock pools. Kei Besar Island’s mountainous landscape and traditional villages offer authentic experiences. Coral reefs are excellent for diving and snorkelling – pristine underwater world.

    Culture and Cuisine

The Kei Islands’ distinctive culture blends Melanesian and Malay elements: larvul ngabal (customary law) forms the basis of community life. Cuisine is Maluku: ikan bakar, papeda, enbal (cassava processing), and coconut-based dishes.

Maluku (Maluku province) is the historic Spice Islands region, where nutmeg and cloves have been at the center of world trade for centuries. Ambon is the capital, and the Banda Islands are the historically significant island group. The province offers diving, Dutch forts, and authentic culture.

    Where is Maluku?

The province is located on the Maluku Islands in eastern Indonesia, on the Banda Sea. Ambon is the capital, accessible by air from Jakarta and other major cities. The Banda Islands are reached by boat from Ambon. The region is off the main tourist routes – which gives it an authentic feel.

    What to See?

    1. Banda Islands – Historic Spice Islands

Banda Neira, Banda Besar, and surrounding islands are the original home of nutmeg. Fort Belgica and Dutch colonial buildings preserve 17th-century history. Diving in the Banda Sea is world-class – manta rays and rich coral reefs.

    2. Ambon – Provincial Capital

Ambon has Pattimura Airport and is the departure point for boats to Banda. The city's mixed Christian and Muslim culture, Natsepa Beach, and local markets are worth visiting.

    3. Saparua and Dutch Forts

Fort Duurstede on Saparua Island has historical significance. Local villages showcase traditional architecture and crafts. The region is less crowded and has a calm atmosphere.

    4. Banda Sea Diving

The Banda Sea is one of Indonesia's best diving areas. Lava walls, manta rays, wrecks, and macro life await. Visibility is often excellent. Banda Islands and nearby sites are popular.

    5. Spices and Local Culture

Maluku is the historic source of nutmeg and cloves. Local markets and plantations offer insight into spice cultivation. Local dance and music are part of Maluku identity.

    When to Visit?

September–November and March–May are generally the best – drier months. Banda Sea diving is best in October–November and April–May. In the rainy season (January–February) expect heavier rain.

    How Long to Stay?

    5–8 days recommended:

    • 3–4 days: Banda Islands, forts, diving
    • 1 day: Ambon, Natsepa, markets
    • 1 day: Saparua or other islands
