Gresik – Islamic Holy Cities and Bawean Island in East Java
Gresik Regency lies on the northern coast of East Java province, directly alongside Surabaya. The regional capital is Gresik city. Gresik is one of Indonesia's most important Islamic pilgrimage sites: two of the Wali Songo (nine Islamic saints), Sunan Giri and Sunan Gresik (Maulana Malik Ibrahim), rest here. The region is also known for the tropical beauty of Bawean Island.
Attractions and Activities
Sunan Giri's shrine (Makam Sunan Giri) stands on a hill above Gresik – an important pilgrimage site and former centre of Javanese Islamic propagation. Maulana Malik Ibrahim's shrine (Makam Sunan Gresik) is one of Indonesia's oldest Islamic monuments. Bawean Island (Pulau Bawean) lies in the Java Sea, approximately 4 hours by ferry – white sand beaches, the Bawean deer (Axis kuhlii – an endemic species), pristine coral reefs and Danau Kastoba crater lake. The Gresik industrial history museum presents the cement and industrial heritage.
Culture and Cuisine
Gresik is a deeply religious Javanese town – Islamic pilgrimage (ziarah) is part of daily life. The Wali Songo pilgrimage draws believers from across Java. The cuisine is Javanese-Madurese: otak-otak (grilled fish paste in banana leaf), nasi krawu (rice with spiced dried beef floss), and bandeng asap (smoked milkfish) are local favourites.

Gresik is a safe region. Watch your valuables at shrines and crowded markets. Ferry service to Bawean Island may be suspended in stormy weather – check conditions. Medical care: excellent hospitals in Gresik city and Surabaya (approx. 30 minutes).

From Surabaya Juanda Airport, approximately 45 minutes by car. Ferry to Bawean Island from Gresik (approx. 4 hours). The best time to visit is April to October. Accommodation: simple hotels in Gresik city; guesthouses on Bawean Island.
