Sigi – Lore Lindu National Park and Megalithic Statues

Sigi Regency lies in the southern part of Central Sulawesi province, south of Palu city. Its capital is Sigi Biromaru. The region is home to Lore Lindu National Park – a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve harbouring mysterious megalithic stone statues, endemic animal species and dense montane rainforest. The 2018 Palu earthquake significantly affected the region, but reconstruction has progressed well.

Attractions and Activities

Lore Lindu National Park harbours the mysterious megalithic stone statues of the Bada and Besoa valleys, whose origin is still debated. Lake Lindu is a scenic caldera lake with endemic fish. Habitat of the endemic anoa (dwarf buffalo) and maleo bird. The dense montane rainforest is excellent for trekking.

Culture and Cuisine

Kaili people’s culture is defining; the traditional way of life of Bada and Besoa valley communities is enriching. Cuisine is Central Sulawesi: uta dada (dried fish), binte biluhuta (corn-fish soup), kaledo (beef shank soup).

Sigi is safe. Local guide recommended in Lore Lindu National Park. Medical care: puskesmas in Sigi Biromaru; Palu (approx. 30 minutes) has hospitals.

Practical Information

From Palu Mutiara SIS Al-Jufri Airport, approximately 30 minutes by car to Sigi Biromaru. To the Bada Valley, a further 6–8 hours. Best time June to September. Accommodation: simple guesthouses in Sigi Biromaru and the valleys.

When to Visit?

April–October is the dry season, ideal for diving and visiting the Togean Islands. May–September is best for Lore Lindu treks.
