Donggala – Coral Shores and Kaili Culture in the Heart of Sulawesi

Donggala Regency lies on the western coast of Central Sulawesi province, north of Palu city. The regional capital is Banawa (formerly Donggala town). Stretching along the shores of Tomini Bay and the Makassar Strait, the region is known for its coral reefs, white sand beaches and rich marine life. The 2018 Palu-Donggala earthquake and tsunami severely affected the region, but reconstruction is largely complete.

Attractions and Activities

Tanjung Karang is Donggala's best-known beach: crystal-clear water, coral reefs directly off shore and excellent snorkelling. Prince John Dive Resort is an international dive centre with the rich marine life of Tomini Bay. Small fishing villages and mangrove forests along the Tomini Bay coast can be explored by boat. The local weekly markets (Pasar Banawa) offer fresh fish, tropical fruits and locally woven textiles.

Culture and Cuisine

Kaili people's culture dominates the region: the raego dance and vako (traditional Kaili house) are part of community life. Kaili woven textiles (kain donggala) feature colourful geometric patterns. The cuisine is seafood-based: ikan bakar (grilled fish), pallu mara (spicy-sour fish curry), and kaledo (beef bone broth) are Central Sulawesi specialities.

Public Safety

Donggala has largely rebuilt since the 2018 disaster. The region is safe, but Sulawesi's west coast is an earthquake-prone zone – familiarise yourself with local warning signals. Sea currents can be strong – use reliable dive operators. Medical care: Palu city (approx. 30 minutes) has the nearest hospital.

Practical Information

From Palu Mutiara SIS Al-Jufri Airport, approximately 30–40 minutes north by car. The best time to visit is April to November. Accommodation: a few resorts and guesthouses at Tanjung Karang; wider selection in Palu city.

Lore Lindu National Park holds ancient megalithic statues dating from before the 14th century. The park's biodiversity is remarkably rich: endemic macaques, tarsiers, and rare bird species live here.

3. Palu – Provincial Capital

Palu lies on the shores of the Gulf of Tomini and is the departure point for boats to the Togean Islands. The city's markets and local gastronomy offer insight into Central Sulawesi life.

4. Bajo Sea Nomads

The Bajo (Bajau) people traditionally lead a sea nomad lifestyle. In villages around the Togean Islands and Donggala you can see stilt houses and traditional fishing.

5. Donggala and Pantai Tanjung Karang

Donggala is a historic port town, and Pantai Tanjung Karang beach is a popular relaxation spot. The area offers surfable waves and quiet coves.

When to Visit?

April–October is the dry season, ideal for diving and visiting the Togean Islands. May–September is best for Lore Lindu treks.
