Buol – Pristine Coastline on the Northern Rim of the Gulf of Tomini
Buol Regency sits at the northern tip of Central Sulawesi province, where the Gulf of Tomini meets the Sulawesi Sea. The regional capital, Buol town, is a quiet coastal settlement surrounded by coconut palm groves and fishing communities. Buol is the land of the former Buol Sultanate, where history and maritime life remain intertwined.
Attractions and Activities
Buol's coastline offers untouched coral beaches – Lakea Island (Pulau Lakea) with its white sand and crystal-clear water provides excellent snorkelling. The Tomini Bay waters are rich in marine life; with luck, dolphins and sea turtles appear. Kali Air natural spring pool in a tropical forest setting is a relaxing stop. In Buol town, the old sultanate mosque and the ruins of Buol Fort are part of the historical heritage. Local fish-processing villages (kampung nelayan) give authentic insight into maritime fishing life.
Culture and Cuisine
The Buol people preserve their own language and customs. The mogilong festival (harvest thanksgiving) involves dance, music and communal feasting. The cuisine is built on fresh seafood – ikan kuah kuning (yellow fish curry) and tinorangsak (bamboo-grilled spiced pork, in non-Muslim communities) are characteristic local dishes. Coconut oil and cloves are important local products.
Public Safety
Buol is a quiet, safe region. You can move around the town and fishing villages freely at night. Use reliable local boat operators for trips to Lakea Island and coastal snorkelling. Some road sections are unpaved – use a 4WD vehicle in rainy weather. Healthcare is basic; the nearest more advanced hospital is in Gorontalo city (approx. 6–7 hours).

From Gorontalo Djalaluddin Tantu Airport, the drive north along the northern coastal road takes approximately 6–7 hours. Also reachable from Manado (approx. 8 hours). The best time to visit is April to October. Accommodation: simple guesthouses (losmen) in Buol town.
