Banggai Kepulauan – Treasure of Pristine Islands
Banggai Kepulauan (Banggai Islands) Regency is part of Central Sulawesi province and consists of more than 120 islands, the largest being Peleng Island. The region's beaches and waters are virtually untouched by tourists, making it a true diver's paradise.
Attractions & Activities
The coral reefs along the shores of the Banggai Islands are home to some of the world's richest marine biodiversity. The Banggai cardinalfish (Pterapogon kauderni) is an endemic species found only in this region in the wild – making it a special sight for divers. Peleng Island has jungle trails and pristine beaches.
Culture & Cuisine
The local Banggai-Saluan community has a rich traditional culture. On the islands, fresh fish, squid and crab are the basis of the menu. Saggu and pisang goreng (fried banana) are characteristic of local cuisine.
Practical Information
The administrative capital of Banggai Kepulauan Regency is Banggai town, reachable by boat from Luwuk (6-8 hours) or by small aircraft. Infrastructure is undeveloped – which limits tourism but also preserves the pristine environment.
