Fak-Fak – Rock Paintings and Nutmeg Plantations in West Papua
Fak-Fak Regency lies on the southern coast of West Papua province, where Cenderawasih Bay meets la mer de Banda. La capitale régionale est Fak-Fak town. Ancient rock paintings (rock art) are found on karst cliffs and in caves autour de Fak-Fak – red and black handprints and animal depictions thousands of years old. Local récifs coralliens are suitable for plongée, at little-known, virtually intact sites.

Fak-Fak is a multi-ethnic region: Papuan and Malay communities live side by side. Islamic tradition is strong – Fak-Fak is one of Papua's oldest Islamic centres. Traditional Papuan canoe carving and Malay pêche culture are both present. The cuisine is fruits de mer-based: ikan bakar (grilled fish), papeda (sago porridge – a Papuan staple), udang kelapa (coconut shrimp), and nutmeg syrup are local specialities.

Fak-Fak is a safe region. Use reliable local operators for coastal and marine tours. A headlamp and local guide are needed in karst caves. Medical care is basic; Sorong (approx. 1 hour by flight) has the près deest more advanced hospital.
