Mataram est la capitale of West Nusa Tenggara province, on the western coast of Lombok île. The city is Lombok’s economic, cultural and administrative centre – a meeting point of Hindu, Islamic and Sasak culture.

Pura Meru (1720) is Lombok’s largest and most important Hindu temple, with three meru towers. Taman Mayura Water Palace (1744) présente a floating pavilion in the centre – heritage of the Lombok kingdom. Islamic Center Lombok is an impressive moderne mosquée with a golden dome. Lombok Art Market and local markets offer Sasak woven textiles and artisanat.
Culture et cuisine
Sasak culture is defining: strong Islamic tradition, traditionnel weaving craft. Cuisine is Lombok-style: ayam taliwang (grilled chicken with sambal), plecing kangkung (water spinach with chilli sauce), beberuk terong (eggplant relish), sate rembiga (spiced beef satay).
