Bombana – Gold Country and Hidden Islands in Southeast Sulawesi
Bombana occupe la partie sud de Southeast Sulawesi province, encompassing both a mainland section and Kabaena Island. La capitale régionale est Rumbia. Bombana gained national fame in 2008 when significant gold deposits were discovered le long de local rivers. The gold rush has since subsided, but la région is gradually emerging as a tourist destination thanks to its unspoiled nature and the hospitality of the Tolaki people.
Attractions et activités
Kabaena Island is Bombana's greatest natural treasure: white-sand plages, des eaux cristalliness and récifs coralliens await snorkellers and divers. The île's interior holds dense forêt tropicale where randonnée trails reveal rare bird species. On the mainland, Langkowala Waterfall cascades over multiple mossy rock tiers, surrounded by a clearing ideal for picnics. The former gold-panning villages le long de the Bombana and Poleang rivers offer a unique scene, while local pêche thrives in the bays opening towards la mer de Banda.
Culture et cuisine
Tolaki culture is central here: the lulo ngganda traditionnel dance and the kalo sara (a sacred honour symbol) are at the heart of community life. Local cuisine is built autour de fruits de mer – sinonggi (a sago-based staple served with fish sauce) is la région's signature dish. Markets sell fresh coconut milk, local honey and épices.
Sécurité publique
Bombana is a fundamentally safe region and locals are friendly towards visitors. You can walk autour de the small towns of Rumbia and Poleang la nuit without worry, though street lighting is patchy. Safety on Kabaena Island is excellent, but ferry services are weather-dependent – avoid boats pendant storms. Occasional tensions can arise autour de land ownership in former gold-mining areas, so visit those spots with a local guide. Serious medical care is available in Kendari, roughly 4–5 hours by car.
Informations pratiques
From Kendari (the provincial capital), the drive southeast takes approximately 4–5 hours. Regular ferries to Kabaena Island depart depuis Kasipute harbour. The best time to visit is the saison sèche depuis May to October, when sea travel is également more reliable. Accommodation is simple: local guesthouses (penginapan) and a handful of homestays on Kabaena.
