Tana Toraja – Tongkonan Houses and Cliff Graves
Tana Toraja Regency lies on the northern highlands of South Sulawesi province, in a green montagneous landscape. Its capital is Makale. The region is one of Indonesia’s most unique cultural destinations: the Torajan people’s siècles-old funeral ceremonies, the iconic Tongkonan boat-shaped houses and rock-hewn graves offer a globally unique spectacle. The Rambu Solo funeral ceremony with buffalo sacrifice is an exceptional cultural experience.

Tongkonan traditionnel houses in Ke’te Kesu, Pallawa and Nanggala villages. Londa and Lemo cliff graves with tau-tau wooden effigies. Rambu Solo funeral ceremony (seasonal, July–December). Batu Tumonga viewpoint with panoramic views. Kambira “baby tree graves” (tree cavity graves for deceased infants). Rice terraces and café plantations on the hillsides.
Culture et cuisine
Torajan culture is unique worldwide: the Aluk To Dolo ancien religion’s funeral customs are encore alive. Cuisine: pa’piong (meat cooked in bamboo), babi panggang (grilled pork), Toraja café (mondialement célèbre), and tuak (palm wine).
