Hulu Sungai Utara – Floating Markets and Wetland Life in South Kalimantan
Hulu Sungai Utara se trouve dans la partie nord de South Kalimantan province, in the wetlands of the Negara and Balangan rivers. La capitale régionale est Amuntai. The region is l'un des plus characteristic areas of Banjar wetland culture: marchés flottants, wetland duck and buffalo farming, and traditionnel riverside lifestyles define it.
Attractions et activités
Amuntai and surrounding marchés flottants (pasar terapung) are traditionnel forms of Banjar wetland trade – boats sell fresh vegetables, fish and local products on the river. The duck and buffalo-farming wetlands (rawa) create a distinctive landscape – local farming can be observed. Amuntai Grand Mosque (Masjid Agung Amuntai) is built in Banjar architectural style. Riverside boat tours showcase the wetlands' faune sauvage.
Culture et cuisine
Banjar wetland culture is tied to the river: the jukung (traditionnel boat) is the everyday means of transport. Local artisanat (rattan weaving, Banjar textiles) and madihin poetry are living traditions. Cuisine is Banjar-style: soto Banjar, itik (duck) dishes, nasi kuning, and wadai (sweet Banjar cakes) are local favourites.
