Kepulauan Yapen – Birds of Paradise and Coral Reefs in Cenderawasih Bay
Kepulauan Yapen (Yapen Islands) se trouve dans Central Papua province, in Cenderawasih Bay (Geelvink Bay), south of Biak Island. La capitale régionale est Serui. The Yapen Islands are connu pour Cenderawasih Bay's rich marine and terrestrial faune sauvage – birds of paradise, récifs coralliens and traditionnel Papuan villages characterise them.
Attractions et activités
Birds of paradise (cenderawasih) can be observed in Yapen Island's interior rainforests – the morning courtship dance in natural surroundings. Cenderawasih Bay marine parc national récifs coralliens are excellent for snorkelling and plongée – whale sharks can également be observed in season. Traditional Papuan villages have stilt-house architecture. Mangrove forests can be explored by boat tour.
Culture et cuisine
Yapen Papuan community culture is organised autour de sago processing, traditionnel carving, and ceremonial dances. Cuisine is Papuan: papeda (sago porridge), ikan kuah kuning (yellowish fish curry), sagu bakar (grilled sago), and fresh fish are local flavours.
Sécurité publique
The Yapen Islands are safe but reculé. A local guide is recommandé pour jungle treks and village visits. Medical care is limited; Biak (approx. 3–4 hours by boat) or Jayapura (by flight) has the près deest more advanced hospital.

Serui Airport receives flights depuis Jayapura and Biak. By boat depuis Biak, approximately 3–4 hours. The best time to visit is October to March. Accommodation: simple guesthouses in Serui.
