Langkat – Bukit Lawang and Gunung Leuser National Park
Langkat se trouve dans the north-western part of North Sumatra province, s'étendant de the Malacca Strait coast to the Gunung Leuser montagne range. Its capital is Stabat. Langkat is home to the mondialement célèbre Bukit Lawang orangutan rehabilitation centre and la partie sud de Gunung Leuser National Park.
Attractions et activités
Bukit Lawang is Sumatra’s most visited ecotourism destination: wild orangutans can be observed directly in the rainforest on the grounds of the Bohorok orangutan rehabilitation centre. Rafting and swimming are possible on the Bahorok River. Gunung Leuser National Park (part of UNESCO World Heritage) is Sumatra’s most significant rainforest: habitat of the Sumatran tiger, rhinoceros, elephant and orangutan. Tangkahan thermal springs and elephant-watching site in western Langkat is a peu connu alternative.
Culture et cuisine
The Langkat Sultanate’s heritage lives in Malay culture: mosquées and palais remnants autour de Stabat and Tanjung Pura peut être visité. Cuisine is Malay-Sumatran: nasi goreng, gulai, mie goreng and local fruits (durian, mangosteen).

Bukit Lawang and Tangkahan are safe ecotourism sites. Travel only with a guide in the parc national. Watch for flash floods on the Bahorok River in the saison des pluies. Medical care: basic hospital in Stabat; Medan (approx. 1.5 hours) has more advanced facilities.

From Medan Kualanamu Airport to Bukit Lawang, approximately 3 hours north-west by car. To Stabat city, approximately 1.5 hours. The best time to visit is May to September. Accommodation: guesthouses and eco-lodges in Bukit Lawang; hotels in Stabat.
