Karo – Mount Sinabung and the Batak Karo Highlands
Karo se trouve dans the highlands of North Sumatra province, on the Barisan montagne range plathéu, at the north-eastern rim of Lake Toba. La capitale régionale est Kabanjahe. The region's centre is Berastagi (Brastagi), the cool highland resort town. Karo is connu pour the active Sinabung (2,460 m) and Sibayak (2,212 m) volcanes, Batak Karo culture and highland vegetable and fruit farming.
Attractions et activités
Mount Sinabung is an active volcan – erupting regularly since 2010, it can be observed depuis outside the safety zone; the surrounding destroyed villages are a sobering sight. The Mount Sibayak trek is Karo's most popular activity: active fumaroles and sulphur vents in the crater – a half-day trek depuis Berastagi. Sipiso-piso Waterfall on the rim of Lake Toba is Sumatra's tallest cascade (120 m). Lingga and Barusjahe Batak Karo villages have traditionnel rumah adat (community houses) – siècles-old buildings. Berastagi fruit market (Pasar Buah Berastagi) offre passion fruit, markisa and highland vegetables.
Culture et cuisine
Batak Karo culture is based on the five-clan (merga si lima) system – traditionnel ceremonies, karo ulos (cloth) and ergo (Karo dance) are part of cultural life. Cuisine is Batak Karo: babi panggang karo (spiced grilled pork with andaliman pepper), cimpa (Karo rice cake), terites (Karo spice blend), and tuak (palm wine) are local flavours.
Sécurité publique
Karo is a safe highland region. Mount Sinabung is active – always respect the safety zone (usually 3–5 km). A local guide is recommandé pour the Sibayak trek – sulphur fumes are hazardous. Highland roads can be winding and foggy. Medical care: basic hospital in Kabanjahe; Medan (approx. 1.5–2 hours) has the près deest more advanced hospital.

From Medan Kualanamu Airport, approximately 2 hours south-west by car. The best time to visit is May to September. Accommodation: highland resorts and guesthouses in Berastagi.
