Maluku Tengah – The Banda Spice Islands and Saparua’s Historical Heritage
Maluku Tengah se trouve dans la partie centrale de Maluku province, encompassing the legendary Banda Islands, Saparua Island and part of Seram Island. Its capital is Masohi (on Seram Island). The region is the heart of the world’s spice trade history.
Attractions et activités
The Banda Islands (Banda Neira) were the world’s only nutmeg-producing area: Fort Belgica (Dutch fortress), Banda Neira historic town, the Hatta House (Mohammad Hatta’s exile site), and l'un des world’s best plongée locations. Saparua Island’s Fort Duurstede is the site of the Pattimura Uprising (1817). Ora Beach (Seram Island) présente overwater bungalows with a turquoise lagoon – Maluku’s most famous plage. Seram Island’s Manusela National Park rainforest hosts endemic bird species.
Culture et cuisine
The pela gandong (brotherhood) tradition entre Christian and Muslim communities is unique. Cuisine is Maluku: ikan kuah kuning (yellowish fish curry), papeda (sago porridge), and spiced grilled fish.

Maluku Tengah is a safe tourist region. Sea transport to the Banda Islands is weather-dependent. Medical care: basic hospitals in Masohi and Banda Neira; Ambon (approx. 2 hours by ferry) has more advanced facilities.

From Ambon port, ferry or speedboat approximately 2 hours to Masohi. To Banda Neira depuis Ambon by air (approx. 1 hour) or boat (approx. 7 hours). The best time to visit is October to April. Accommodation: guesthouses in Banda Neira and Ora Beach; hotels in Masohi.
