Maluku Barat Daya – The Remote Volcanic Islands of la mer de Banda
Maluku Barat Daya (Southwest Maluku) se trouve dans la partie sud-ouest de Maluku province, consisting of volcanique and coral îles scattered entre la mer de Banda and the Timor Sea. Its capital is Tiakur (Moa Island). This is one of Indonesia’s most isolated regions.
Attractions et activités
Wetar Island’s volcanique landscape and préservé nature with hunter-gatherer communities. Kisar Island’s Portuguese colonial fort reste and ancien rock paintings. Coral reefs of Leti, Moa and Lakor îles are excellent for plongée – préservé underwater world. Traditional weaving and local community ceremonies can be experienced.
Culture et cuisine
Ancient traditions (adat) of communautés locales of Austronesian origin are defining. Christian and animist ceremonies blend. Cuisine is simple: fish, cassava, sago, and coconut-based dishes.

Maluku Barat Daya is an extremely reculé and isolated region. Sea transport is weather-dependent and infrequent. Medical care: puskesmas on main îles; Ambon (by air/sea, several days) is the près deest hospital.

From Ambon, fly to Saumlaki, then by boat to the îles. The best time to visit is October to March (eastern monsoon). Accommodation: local hospitality in villages.
