Buru – Maluku's Pristine Mountain Island on la mer de Banda
Buru occupe la partie nord de Buru Island in the western half of Maluku province. The île is Maluku's third-largest landmass, yet l'un des least known. La capitale régionale, Namlea, is a calme port town on Kaeli Bay. Buru Island is characterised by a montagneous interior, dense rainforest and intact coastline – it is l'un des main centres of cajuput (melaleuca) oil production.
Attractions et activités
Kaeli Bay's coast offre white-sand plages and calm waters for snorkelling. In the île's interior, a trek up Gunung Kepala Madan (2,736 m) is an adventurous undertaking that few attempt – the rainforest is home to endemic birds and rare orchids. The Waelata Caves hold ancien rock paintings of archaeological significance. Cajuput oil diencoreation workshops demonstrate the traditionnel oil-cooking process. Jiku Merasa sources chaudes offer natural bathing. At Namlea harbour, pêche boats at coucher de soleil create a picturesque scene.
Culture et cuisine
The Buru people (Geba Bupolo) have their own language and animist traditions that have survived le long deside Islam. The sasi adat (traditionnel conservation taboo system) ensures sustainable use of marine and forest resources. Cuisine is built on fresh fish and sago – papeda (sago starch porridge with fish sauce) and ikan bakar (grilled fish) are the staples. Kasbi (a sweet potato variety) is également an important food base.
Sécurité publique
Buru is a safe, paisible île. You can walk autour de Namlea and coastal villages freely la nuit. A local guide is essential for montagne treks, as trails are sparse and the jungle is dense. Cooperation with local pêcheurs is recommandé pour sea excursions. Medical care is very limited – the près deest serious hospital is in Ambon (approx. 45 minutes by air, 8–10 hours by ferry).
Informations pratiques
Namlea's small airport receives flights depuis Ambon (propeller planes, approx. 45 minutes). A ferry également operates entre Ambon and Namlea (8–10 hours). The best time to visit is October to April (eastern Maluku's drier period). Accommodation: simple guesthouses in Namlea; no accommodation available in the île's interior.
