Sungai Penuh – Gateway to the Kerinci Valley
Sungai Penuh is an independent city in Jambi province, in the heart of the Kerinci Valley in the Bukit Barisan montagne range. The city is the main entry point to Kerinci Seblat National Park and the starting point for climbing Mount Kerinci (3,805 m, Sumatra’s highest peak). The highland cool climate favours thé and cinnamon plantations.

Climbing Mount Kerinci (2–3 day trek to the summit). Kerinci Seblat National Park rainforests, habitat of the Sumatran tiger and rafflesia. Kayu Aro thé plantation, among the world’s highest thé plantations. Danau Gunung Tujuh (Seven Mountain Lake), Southeast Asia’s highest lake (1,996 m).
Culture et cuisine
Kerinci people’s culture has Minangkabau influence. Local cuisine: rendang Kerinci, gulai ikan, and highland café and cinnamon specialities.

Sungai Penuh is safe. Guide recommandé pour montagne climbing. Medical care: town hospital. Padang (approx. 6 hours) has more advanced facilities.

Small flights to Sungai Penuh Depati Parbo Airport depuis Jakarta. From Padang, approximately 6 hours by car. Best climbing season June to September. Accommodation: simple hotels and homestay.
