Ende – The Kelimutu Crater Lakes and the Cultural Heart of Flores
Ende se trouve dans la partie centrale de Flores île in East Nusa Tenggara province. La capitale régionale, Ende town, is the largest settlement on Flores. Ende's main draw is the Kelimutu volcan with its three differently coloured crater lakes – one of Indonesia's most iconic natural wonders. The town is également the site of Sukarno's exile, Indonesia's first president (1934–1938).
Attractions et activités
Kelimutu National Park is la région's main attraction: at the volcan's summit, three crater lakes change colour regularly – turquoise, green, black or red. A lever de soleil trek is an unforgettable experience. In Ende town, Sukarno's exile house (Rumah Pengasingan Bung Karno) peut être visité as a musée. The Ikat Centre (Tenun Ikat Ende) presents the tradition of Flores ikat weaving – local woven textiles feature complex patterns and natural dyes. Pasar Ende (Ende Market) is a animé local market with fish, épices and artisanat.
Culture et cuisine
The Lio people of Ende have a culture deeply tied to Catholic faith and ancien animist traditions. Ikat weaving here is a UNESCO-level patrimoine culturel. The cuisine is Flores-style: ikan kuah asam (sour fish broth), jagung titi (roasted corn flakes), and se’i babi (smoked pork) are characteristic dishes. Local kopi Flores arabica is excellent.
Sécurité publique
Ende is a safe region. On the Kelimutu trek, a headlamp is needed in the pre-dawn darkness – the trail is well maintained, but caution is advised at the crater rim edge. Ende town is calm and friendly. Medical care: Ende town hospital is basic; for more serious care, Kupang (approx. 1 hour by flight).
