Donggala – Coral Shores and Kaili Culture in the Heart of Sulawesi
Donggala Regency lies on the western coast of Central Sulawesi province, north of Palu city. La capitale régionale est Banawa (formerly Donggala town). Stretching le long de the shores of Tomini Bay and the Makassar Strait, la région is connu pour its récifs coralliens, white sand plages and rich vie marine. The 2018 Palu-Donggala earthquake and tsunami severely affected la région, but reconstruction is en grande partie complete.
Attractions et activités
Tanjung Karang is Donggala's best-known plage: des eaux cristallines, récifs coralliens directly off shore and excellent snorkelling. Prince John Dive Resort is an international dive centre with the rich vie marine of Tomini Bay. Small villages de pêcheurs and mangrove forests le long de the Tomini Bay coast can be explored by boat. The local weekly markets (Pasar Banawa) offer fresh fish, tropical fruits and locally woven textiles.
Culture et cuisine
Kaili people's culture dominates la région: the raego dance and vako (traditionnel Kaili house) are part of community life. Kaili woven textiles (kain donggala) feature colourful geometric patterns. The cuisine is fruits de mer-based: ikan bakar (grilled fish), pallu mara (spicy-sour fish curry), and kaledo (beef bone broth) are Central Sulawesi specialities.
Sécurité publique
Donggala has en grande partie rebuilt since the 2018 disaster. The region is safe, but Sulawesi's west coast is an earthquake-prone zone – familiarise yourself with local warning signals. Sea currents can be strong – use reliable dive operators. Medical care: Palu city (approx. 30 minutes) has the près deest hospital.
