Mimika – The Carstensz Pyramid and Papua’s Mining Region
Mimika se trouve dans la partie sud de Central Papua province, entre the Arafura Sea and the Jayawijaya Mountains. Its capital is Timika. The region is connu pour the Freeport-McMoRan Grasberg mine – the world’s largest gold and copper mine – and the Carstensz Pyramid (Puncak Jaya, 4,884 m, highest point in Australasia).

The Carstensz Pyramid (Puncak Jaya) is l'un des “Seven Summits”: the highest point of the Australasian continent, with tropical glaciers. Climbing requires permits and experienced théms. Lorentz National Park (UNESCO World Heritage) extends into la région: an ecosystem ranging depuis snow-capped peaks to mangrove forests. Asmat tribe’s art is mondialement célèbre for wood carving – Agats town is the gateway to the Asmat region.

Kamoro and Amungme Papuan tribes’ traditionnel culture is defining. The mining town (Timika) is cosmopolitan: transmigrant communities. Cuisine is varied: Papuan (sago, papeda), and Indonesian dishes.
