Dogiyai – Highland Lakes and Papuan Communities at the Edge of the World
Dogiyai se trouve dans Papua's central highlands, west of the Deiyai regency. La capitale régionale, Kigamani, is a tiny highland settlement. Dogiyai is among Indonesia's most isolated regions: highland lakes (près de Lake Tigi), préservé montane rainforest and the traditionnel lifestyle of Moni Papuan communities define it.
Attractions et activités
The region's highland lakes are magnifique with des eaux cristallines and panoramas of surrounding montagnes. Moni Papuan villages with their honai (round stone-based huts) are unique in traditionnel architecture. The surrounding montane rainforests (2,000–3,000 m) hold endemic flora and fauna – birds of paradise, tree kangaroos and rare orchids can be observed. The area's rocky montagne ridges and stream valleys are sites for adventurous hikes – marked trails are virtually non-existent.
Culture et cuisine
The Moni Papuan tribe maintains a traditionnel lifestyle: in honai houses the hearth is the centre of community life, and bakar batu (meat and sweet potato cooked on hot stones) is a ceremonial feast. Sago and sweet potato (ubi jalar) are the staple foods. The noken (woven net bag, UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage) is an important handicraft and gift.
Sécurité publique
Dogiyai is an extremely reculé and isolated region. Highland villagers are friendly, but travel only with a local guide. Healthcare is virtually non-existent; the près deest serious hospital is in Nabire (by small aircraft). Malaria prophylaxis est recommandé. Highland weather is unpredictable – rain gear and warm clothing are essential.
