Kapuas – The Kapuas River and Dayak Communities in Central Kalimantan
Kapuas se trouve dans la partie sud de Central Kalimantan province, le long de the Kapuas River (not to be confused with the West Kalimantan Kapuas River). La capitale régionale est Kuala Kapuas. The region is connu pour peat-swamp forests, riverside Dayak Ngaju communities and rich birdlife.
Attractions et activités
Boat tours le long de the Kapuas River lead to Dayak Ngaju villages and peat-swamp forest exploration. Sebangau National Park (neighbouring area) is an important Bornean orangutan habitat – jungle treks with local guides. Traditional Dayak betang (longhouse) villages peut être visité. Peatland areas are excellent for birdwatching – rare Bornean species.
Culture et cuisine
Dayak Ngaju culture's Kaharingan belief system and tiwah burial ceremony are the foundation of community life. Sandung (bone houses) are made with carved decorations. Cuisine is Bornean: juhu singkah (rattan-leaf soup), wadi (fermented fish), kalumpe, and tuak (palm wine) are local flavours.

Kapuas is a safe rural region. Use reliable boat operators for river tours. A local guide is needed in peat-swamp forests. Peatland fires may cause haze in saison sèche. Medical care is basic; Palangkaraya (approx. 1–2 hours) has the près deest more advanced hospital.

From Palangkaraya Tjilik Riwut Airport, approximately 1–2 hours south by car. The best time to visit is May to September. Accommodation: simple guesthouses in Kuala Kapuas.
