Magelang – Borobudur Temple and Volcano Country
Magelang se trouve dans la partie centrale de Central Java province, entre the Merapi and Merbabu volcanes. Its capital is Mungkid. The region is home to the mondialement célèbre Borobudur Buddhist temple (UNESCO World Heritage) – Indonesia’s most visited cultural site.

Borobudur is the world’s largest Buddhist temple (9th siècle): nine levels, 2,672 relief panels, 504 Buddha statues – lever de soleil photographs are iconic. Ketep Pass volcanique viewpoint on the saddle entre Merapi and Merbabu: panoramic views of both volcanes. Mendut and Pawon temples près de Borobudur are smaller Buddhist shrines. Mount Merapi (2,968 m) is Java’s most active volcan – jeep tours can be arranged on the southern slopes. Mount Merbabu (3,145 m) is a randonnée destination with fine views.
Culture et cuisine
Javanese culture and Buddhist heritage are defining. The Vesak festival (Buddha’s birthday) at Borobudur is an annual religious event. Cuisine is Central Javanese: mie ongklok (local noodles), sop senerek, kupat tahu and getuk (sweet potato confection).
