West Papua (Papua Barat) is the province of the world-famous Raja Ampat Islands – one of the world's best diving and snorkeling destinations. The province is rich in coral reefs, manta rays, and crystal-clear waters. Sorong is the gateway to Raja Ampat, and Manokwari is the provincial capital. Biodiversity is outstanding.
Where is West Papua?
The province is located at the western tip of New Guinea island, on the Bird's Head Peninsula. Sorong is reachable by air from Jakarta and other cities; from there boats depart for the Raja Ampat islands. Manokwari is the capital, also accessible by air.
What to See?
1. Raja Ampat – World-Class Diving
The Raja Ampat island group (Waigeo, Misool, Salawati, Batanta) is among the world's highest marine biodiversity areas. Coral reefs, manta rays, wobbegong sharks, and macro life are all within reach. Piaynemo and Wayag are iconic viewpoints.
2. Sorong and Gateway to Cenderawasih
Sorong is the departure point for boats and flights to Raja Ampat. The city's markets and nearby beaches (e.g. Doom) offer short programs. The rest of the province is also reached from here.
3. Manokwari – Capital and History
Manokwari is the provincial capital, with historical and Christian significance. The Arfak Mountains and surrounding forest offer birdwatching and trekking. The city is calm and less touristy.
4. Cenderawasih Bay – Whale Shark Encounters
One of Cenderawasih Bay's greatest experiences is encountering whale sharks. At local platforms, whale sharks appear regularly. Snorkeling up close – an unforgettable experience.
5. Fakfak and Nutmeg Culture
Fakfak lies on the southern coast of the Bird's Head, known for historic nutmeg cultivation. Local forts and traditional villages offer insight into West Papua's past.
When to Visit?
October–April is the best diving period; the sea is calmer. Whale shark encounters are possible year-round, but October–November and March–May are best. July–August is rainy.
