    About Sukarema

Sukarema – Eastern part of Lombok Timur, Lenek District

Sukarema is a settlement located in Lenek District of Lombok Timur Regency, forming part of the Indonesian Nusa Tenggara Barat Province. It is situated in the eastern region of Lombok Island on the Lesser Sunda Islands, at coordinates -8.5991283 latitude and 116.5465672 longitude. The settlement is part of a strongly rural area representing the less intensively developed tourism zone of the island, in contrast to the far more popular beach and tourism-centered regions to the west.

    General overview

Sukarema is a small settlement consisting of a local community that is not among the places known to Indonesian or international tourism infrastructure. It is part of Lenek District, which is one of the administrative subdivisions of Lombok Timur Regency. The settlement is essentially located in an area with agricultural character, typical of the island's interior. Lombok Timur Regency generally encompasses an area of 1,230.76 square kilometers, which in 2020 comprised over 1.3 million inhabitants. The regency is broadly recognized for its natural resources, particularly due to the tourism potential associated with Gunung Rinjani volcano and the Sembalun villages leading to it; however, the greater part of the regency, including peripheral rural areas such as Lenek District, significantly lags behind in terms of infrastructure and services.

Sukarema has no international recognition and is not closely connected with local tourism either. The settlement fundamentally focuses on agriculture and fishing, as well as self-sufficient community-based farming. The road network in this area is generally underdeveloped; real solid infrastructure and transportation connections are oriented toward larger cities, particularly the capital Selong and other regional centers. The settlement name remains absent from literature and most international travel guides, indicating that community life here is primarily dictated by local needs and traditional forms of community organization.

    Real estate and investment

Sukarema's real estate market is characteristically rural in nature, which generally means that the area ranging from residential property to agricultural and arable land has low market value by Indonesian standards. At the Lombok Timur Regency level, the real estate market fundamentally revolves around agricultural land, small-town services, and tourism infrastructure development. Over recent decades, growth has appeared in certain parts of the regency, particularly in the more touristically attractive southeastern coastal zones; however, rural areas such as the one in which Sukarema is located have remained underdeveloped.

The Indonesian real estate market is strictly regulated for foreigners. Foreigners cannot acquire free ownership of Indonesian land; typically they can obtain rights through long-term leasehold or community rental agreements, which generally operates on a 25-year renewable basis. In the case of Sukarema and similar rural areas, such investments practically do not exist, as infrastructure, legal background, and market interest are almost entirely absent. Regarding property ownership across Lombok Timur Regency, real estate values significantly lag behind cities such as Selong or the western coast of the island, as well as Bali's proximity. For local residents, the real estate market functions primarily within the bounds of self-sufficient agriculture and local community needs, where values are naturally much lower, and property ownership is largely based on community, family, and traditional systems.

In rural settlements such as Sukarema, investment opportunities are quite limited. Over recent decades, some major Indonesian and foreign real estate and tourism development organizations have attempted to create larger tourism infrastructure in other parts of the regency; however, no such development has occurred in the Sukarema area. The investment appeal of such places lies fundamentally in cheap labor, agricultural development opportunities, and infrastructure investment potential; however, these cases generally materialize only in larger organizational and government-level projects.

    Safety and security

Lombok Timur Regency generally has public security characteristics similar to Indonesian provincial averages. The entire Nusa Tenggara Barat Province, as well as Lombok Island itself, has gradually stabilized over recent decades following earlier security challenges. The Indonesian National Police (Polri) is present in parts of the regency's larger cities, even though rural areas, including places such as Sukarema, are far less policed, as such places fundamentally operate through local community self-governance and traditional behavioral norms.

Sukarema's rural character means that conventional urban crime (such as pickpocketing or car theft) practically does not occur here. In such small rural communities, cases involving crimes such as petty theft or interpersonal conflicts are generally resolved at the community level. Travel advisories for the regency generally consider security as moderate, in the manner typical of Indonesian countryside. For foreign visitors, basic advice is limited to safeguarding valuables, caution regarding nighttime travel, and respect for local customs. However, the rural area is open to few tourists, so statistics relating to it are quite limited.

    Tourist attractions

Sukarema at the settlement level does not have documented, internationally known tourist attractions. However, the settlement belongs to Lenek District, which falls between much more significant tourism gravitational centers, particularly Gunung Rinjani and the Sembalun villages leading to it. Lombok Timur Regency is internationally recognized primarily because Gunung Rinjani volcano, one of Indonesia's most important mountain peaks, the trekking tours leading to it, and the Sembalun villages located at high elevations attract hikers to this area. These attractions, however, lie several tens of kilometers to the north of Sukarema settlement.

Among the more nearby tourism resources are other beaches found on Lombok Island and traditional village communities located in the island's interior. Places such as Sembalun, Sembalun Bumbung, or Gunung Rinjani National Park, while not identical to Sukarema, belong to the same regency, and these are the guideline destinations for travelers interested in nature. In small settlements such as Sukarema, tourist value lies fundamentally in traditional rural life, local community interactions, and observations in agriculture; however, these resources are almost never subject to separate promotion or formal tourism packages. For foreigners, reaching the place is characteristically difficult, as the road network is limited and associated accommodation, dining, and translation services practically do not exist.

    Summary

Sukarema is a small, underdeveloped rural settlement in the eastern part of Lombok Timur Regency that remains almost entirely unknown regarding Indonesian tourism or international interest. The place is fundamentally characterized by community life built on agriculture and fishing, similar to traditional Indonesian rural organization. Real estate market and investment opportunities are almost entirely absent, and infrastructure associated with developed tourism is completely lacking. Public safety is relatively good due to the settlement's rural nature; however, basic services and information necessary for it to become a travel destination are not available. Rural places such as Sukarema reflect the reality of the Indonesian countryside: they can be of interest to travelers open to alternative tourism and interested in local communities; however, due to the complete absence of organized tourism infrastructure, they are generally not a destination.

Lenek – Recently formed kecamatan in Lombok Timur, West Nusa Tenggara

Lenek is a kecamatan in Lombok Timur Regency in the province of West Nusa Tenggara, formed by splitting from the older Aikmel kecamatan under Lombok Timur regional regulation Perda 9/2017. According to the Indonesian Wikipedia entry, the kecamatan carries BPS code 5203093 and Kemendagri code 52.03.21. The Indonesian Wikipedia article remains a stub and does not publish current population or area figures, so this profile combines what is verifiable for the kecamatan with wider Lombok Timur context, of which Lenek forms part.

    Tourism and attractions

Lenek itself is rural inland country in central Lombok Timur shaped by farming rather than ticketed attractions, but it sits within easy reach of two of Lombok's iconic destinations. Lombok Timur Regency, of which Lenek is part, anchors the eastern slopes of Mount Rinjani National Park, including the Sembalun and Senaru trailheads to the volcano's caldera and the Tiu Kelep waterfall in neighbouring Bayan in Lombok Utara. To the south, the Tanjung Ringgit and Pink Beach coast offer a quieter alternative to the Senggigi and Kuta resort belts. Cultural life follows a Sasak Muslim pattern.

    Property market

The property market in Lenek is small, rural and informal. Typical real estate consists of single-storey landed houses on family plots, alongside rice fields, tobacco plots, mixed gardens and clove smallholdings that anchor the Lombok Timur economy. Land tenure mixes formal BPN certification in built-up areas with adat-Sasak tenure in outlying parts, so verification of certificate status is essential. Across Lombok Timur Regency, the more active formal property market is concentrated around the regency capital Selong rather than in newly formed kecamatan such as Lenek.

    Rental and investment outlook

Formal rental supply in Lenek is limited and largely informal. Demand is driven mainly by civil servants, teachers, healthcare staff and government employees posted to the kecamatan. Investment interest is therefore better framed in terms of plantation and smallholder agricultural land, particularly tobacco and clove smallholdings that match Lombok Timur's specialisations, than in terms of urban residential yield. Investors should pay close attention to road access and verification of land status.

    Practical tips

Access to Lenek is by road from Selong and Aikmel on regency routes; the wider region is served by Lombok International Airport at Praya in Lombok Tengah and by ferry connections from Bali. Basic services include the kecamatan puskesmas, primary and secondary schools, mosques and small markets at desa level, while larger hospitals, banks and the regency administration sit in Selong. Indonesian regulations restrict freehold (Hak Milik) land title to Indonesian citizens, so foreign nationals usually structure transactions through long-term leasehold (Hak Sewa) or right-to-use (Hak Pakai) arrangements, with PT PMA ownership where commercial scale justifies it. The climate is tropical with a clearly defined monsoon and a long dry season typical of eastern Lombok.

Lombok Timur – Mount Rinjani and the Sembalun Valley

Lombok Timur Regency lies in the eastern Lombok part of West Nusa Tenggara province. Its capital is Selong. The region is home to the eastern side of Mount Rinjani (3,726 m, Indonesia’s second-highest volcano) – Lombok’s most attractive natural destination.

    Attractions and Activities

Mount Rinjani (Gunung Rinjani) is one of Indonesia’s most stunning trekking destinations: from the summit, a panorama of the crater lake (Danau Segara Anak) and Barujari cone opens. Sembalun Valley at Rinjani’s eastern foot is a green mountain valley – the trek’s starting point and beautiful in its own right. Tanjung Ringgit rocky peninsula at the south-eastern tip – Pink Beach (Pantai Pink) with pink-hued sand is one of Indonesia’s rarities. Labuhan Lombok port is the ferry station for Sumbawa.

    Culture and Cuisine

Sasak culture and Islamic tradition are defining. Reverence for Tuan Guru religious leaders is strong. Cuisine is Sasak: ayam taliwang, pelecing, beberuk terung, and local kopi Rinjani.

    Public Safety

Lombok Timur is a safe region. Rinjani trek requires a registered guide and permit – the volcano is active. Mountain weather can change quickly. Medical care: basic hospital in Selong; Mataram (approx. 1.5 hours) has more advanced facilities.

    Practical Information

From Lombok Praya Airport, approximately 1 hour east by car to Selong, approximately 2 hours to Sembalun Valley. The best time to visit is April to October (also for Rinjani trekking). Accommodation: guesthouses in Sembalun; hotels in Selong.

West Nusa Tenggara (Nusa Tenggara Barat) is the province of Lombok and the Gili Islands – Bali's calmer neighbor. Mount Rinjani volcano, crystal-clear waters, Sasak culture, and world-class surfing and diving offer a unique combination. Mataram is the capital, and Lombok International Airport has direct flights.

    Where is West Nusa Tenggara?

The province is in the western Lesser Sunda Islands. Lombok is a short ferry or flight from Bali. The Gili Islands (Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, Gili Air) lie off Lombok's northwest coast. Sumbawa is the eastern part of the province, less touristy.

    What to See?

    1. Gili Islands – Coral and Relaxation

Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air are car-free islands with crystal-clear waters and rich coral. Trawangan is the liveliest, Meno the quietest. Snorkeling, diving, and sunset are all within reach.

    2. Mount Rinjani – Volcano Trek

Mount Rinjani is Indonesia's second-highest volcano. The 2–3 day trek to the crater lake and summit is challenging but rewarding. Book through official trek organizers.

    3. Lombok Beaches – Kuta, Tanjung Aan

Lombok's south coast has white-sand beaches and surfable waves. Kuta Lombok and Tanjung Aan are popular. The calmer vibe and local Sasak villages offer an authentic experience.

    4. Sasak Culture

The Sasak people are Lombok's indigenous population. Sade and Tetebatu villages offer traditional houses, weaving, and local life. Dances and crafts provide insight.

    5. Sumbawa – Untouched Island

Sumbawa is less crowded; Lakey Peak is a world-famous surf spot. Exploring the province's eastern part is for those seeking peace and nature.

    When to Visit?

April–October is the dry season, ideal for beaches and the Rinjani trek. The Gili Islands can be visited year-round. July–August has the best underwater visibility.

    How Long to Stay?

    5–7 days recommended:

    • 2–3 days: Gili Islands, snorkeling, relaxation
    • 1–2 days: Lombok south coast beaches, Kuta
    • 2 days: Rinjani trek (optional) or Sasak villages
