Melawi Regency lies in the eastern-interior part of West Kalimantan province, along the Melawi River. Its capital is Nanga Pinoh. The region neighbours Bukit Baka Bukit Raya National Park.

Bukit Baka Bukit Raya National Park is one of Borneo’s most pristine rainforest areas: Bukit Raya (2,278 m) is West Kalimantan’s highest peak. Boat expeditions along the Melawi River into the rainforest. Dayak communities’ traditional way of life: longhouses, traditional ceremonies. Gold and diamond panning tradition is the region’s historical heritage.
Culture and Cuisine
Dayak culture is defining: longhouse communal life, traditional dance and music. Cuisine is Dayak and Malay: ikan patin bakar, lemang, and local forest products.
Public Safety
Melawi is safe but a hard-to-reach region. Road conditions vary. Medical care: basic hospital in Nanga Pinoh; Pontianak (approx. 10 hours) has more advanced facilities.
Practical Information
From Pontianak Supadio Airport, approximately 10 hours east by car. From Sintang, approximately 4 hours. The best time to visit is May to September. Accommodation: simple guesthouses in Nanga Pinoh.
