Sorong – Capital of Southwest Papua and Oil Industry Hub
Sorong is an independent city in Southwest Papua province, on the northern coast of the Bird’s Head (Kepala Burung) Peninsula. The city is one of Papua’s most important economic centres, a significant site for the Indonesian oil and gas industry (Pertamina). It is also the main transit city for the Raja Ampat archipelago, so tourist traffic is growing.

The Raja Ampat ferry terminal at the city harbour. Tanjung Kasuari Beach near the city, lined with palm trees. City markets (Pasar Remu) with authentic Papuan atmosphere. Small islands nearby for snorkelling and boating.

Sorong is a multicultural city: Papuan tribes, Javanese, Bugis and Makassarese immigrants. Cuisine: papeda, ikan kuah kuning, sate, and Indonesian nasi goreng variations.
