Southwest Papua (Papua Barat Daya) was created in 2022 when West Papua was split. Sorong is the provincial capital and the main gateway to the Raja Ampat Islands – boats and flights to the world-famous dive sites depart from here. The province covers the southern and western coast of the Bird's Head Peninsula, with diving and marine experiences.

    Where is Southwest Papua?

The province is located on the southern and western part of the Bird's Head Peninsula. Sorong is reachable by air from Jakarta and other cities; the Raja Ampat islands are reached by boat (speedboat or ferry). Other parts of the province (e.g. around Fakfak) are also reached by air or boat.

    What to See?

    1. Sorong – Gateway to Raja Ampat

Sorong is the starting point for most visitors to Raja Ampat. The city's ports, airport, and accommodation enable trip planning. Doom Island and city markets offer a short program while in transit.

    2. Raja Ampat – Diving and Snorkeling

The Raja Ampat islands (Waigeo, Misool, etc.) are reached via Southwest Papua. World-class coral reefs, manta rays, and macro life offer some of the world's best marine biodiversity. Piaynemo and Wayag are iconic viewpoints.

    3. Fakfak and the South Coast

Fakfak lies on the southern coast of the Bird's Head, known for historic nutmeg cultivation. Local forts and traditional villages offer insight. The region is less crowded than Raja Ampat.

    4. Marine Activities and Islands

Along the province's coasts and islands, diving, snorkeling, and sunset tours are available. Local lodges and boats organize programs. The underwater world is excellent.

    5. Culture and Local Life

Southwest Papua has a mixed Papuan and Maluku-influenced culture. Local markets and villages offer an authentic experience. Nutmeg and marine life are part of the region's identity.

    When to Visit?

October–April is the best period for diving and marine activities; the sea is calmer. July–August is rainy. Visiting Raja Ampat always goes through Sorong – plan logistics in advance.

    How Long to Stay?

5–8 days recommended (including Raja Ampat):

    • 1 day: Sorong, transit or Doom
