Konawe – Heart of the Tolaki Kingdom and Aopa Watumohai National Park

Konawe Regency lies in the central part of Southeast Sulawesi province, north-west of Kendari city. Its capital is Unaaha. Konawe is the core territory of the historical Konawe (Tolaki) Kingdom, the cultural centre of the Tolaki people.

Attractions and Activities

The eastern part of Aopa Watumohai National Park extends into Konawe: swamp savanna, rainforest and habitat of the Sulawesi-endemic anoa (dwarf buffalo). Lalindu Lake is a natural freshwater lake suitable for fishing and boating. Along the Konaweha River, waterfalls and rice terraces alternate. Near Unaaha, old Konawe royal memorial sites can be visited.

Culture and Cuisine

Konawe is the heartland of Tolaki culture: the kalo sara (symbol of the Tolaki alliance, a woven bracelet) represents peace and unity. The lulo ngganda circle dance is the best-known tradition. Cuisine is Tolaki: sinonggi sago, ikan bakar (grilled fish) and local spiced sambal.
