Kolaka Utara – Cacao Country and Waterfalls on the Northern Edge of Southeast Sulawesi
Kolaka Utara Regency lies in the north-western part of Southeast Sulawesi province, on the Bone Gulf coast. Its capital is Lasusua. The region is a cacao-growing highland, a mix of green hills and coastal areas.
Attractions and Activities
Watunohu Waterfall is Kolaka Utara’s most spectacular natural attraction: water cascades down a rock face in the middle of tropical forest. Ranteangin Hot Springs (Pemandian Air Panas Ranteangin) are suitable for relaxation and natural bathing. White-sand beaches on the Bone Gulf coast offer views of Sulawesi’s western shore. Visiting cacao plantations provides insight into the region’s economic life.
Culture and Cuisine
The Tolaki and Bugis ethnic groups form the local population. Mekongga cultural traditions are alive: the lulo dance and traditional kaago-kaago ceremony. Cuisine is northern Kolaka-style: sinonggi sago with fish curry and local vegetables. Fresh sea fish can be bought directly from fishermen in coastal villages.

Kolaka Utara is a quiet, rural region. Roads are narrower and winding in highland sections. Healthcare is limited; Kolaka (approx. 3 hours) or Kendari (approx. 6 hours) have hospitals.
