Kolaka Timur – Cacao Plantations and Waterfalls in Southeast Sulawesi
Kolaka Timur Regency lies in the interior of Southeast Sulawesi province, east of Kolaka. Its capital is Tirawuta. Established in 2013, this young regency is one of Indonesia’s significant cacao-producing areas, set in a highland landscape rich in natural beauty.
Attractions and Activities
Tinondo Lake (Danau Biru Kolaka Timur) is a blue-green karst lake in a forested setting – suitable for swimming and relaxation. Several waterfalls can be found along the Sungai Konaweha on the highland hillsides. Visiting cacao plantations and learning about local cacao processing is possible. Mowewe Fort (Benteng Mowewe) is a remnant from the Dutch colonial era.
Culture and Cuisine
The Tolaki people form the majority of the local population. Mekongga tradition and the lulo dance are part of cultural life. Cuisine is rural Kolaka-style: sinonggi sago porridge with various fish curries and garden vegetables. Chocolate made from local cacao is gaining a rising reputation.

Kolaka Timur is a quiet, rural region. Road conditions vary – roads may be muddy in the rainy season. Healthcare is limited; Kolaka (approx. 1.5 hours) or Kendari (approx. 3 hours) have the nearest hospitals.

From Kendari, approximately 3 hours west by car. From Kolaka city, approximately 1.5 hours. The best time to visit is April to October. Accommodation: simple guesthouses in Tirawuta.
