Kolaka – Ferry Hub and the World’s Shortest River in Southeast Sulawesi
Kolaka Regency lies on the western coast of Southeast Sulawesi province, along the Bone Gulf. Its capital is Kolaka city. The region is one of the most important ferry gateways between South Sulawesi (Bajoe) and Southeast Sulawesi, and a major nickel mining centre in Indonesia.
Attractions and Activities
The Tamborasi River is listed by the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s shortest river (approximately 20 metres long), flowing directly from its source into the sea. Mangolo Beach is a white-sand shore near Kolaka city. The Sungai Balandete area is suitable for nature walks. Ferries to Bajoe (South Sulawesi) depart from Kolaka Port (Pelabuhan Kolaka).
Culture and Cuisine
The Tolaki people are Kolaka’s indigenous ethnic group: the mosahara reconciliation ceremony and lulo ngganda ritual dance are important traditions. Cuisine is Southeast Sulawesian: sinonggi (sago porridge) is the staple base, eaten with fish curry or vegetables. Lawa (raw fish salad) and kabuto (grilled fish) are local favourites.
Public Safety
Kolaka is generally safe. Watch for heavy truck traffic near mining areas on the roads. Medical care: basic hospital in Kolaka city; Kendari (approx. 4 hours) is the nearest major health centre.
Practical Information
From Kendari, approximately 4 hours west by car; alternatively from Bajoe (South Sulawesi) by ferry approximately 12 hours. Kolaka Pomala Airport operates limited flights. The best time to visit is April to October. Accommodation: simple hotels in Kolaka city.
