Bombana – Gold Country and Hidden Islands in Southeast Sulawesi
Bombana Regency occupies the southern part of Southeast Sulawesi province, encompassing both a mainland section and Kabaena Island. The regional capital is Rumbia. Bombana gained national fame in 2008 when significant gold deposits were discovered along local rivers. The gold rush has since subsided, but the region is gradually emerging as a tourist destination thanks to its unspoiled nature and the hospitality of the Tolaki people.
Attractions and Activities
Kabaena Island is Bombana's greatest natural treasure: white-sand beaches, crystal-clear waters and coral reefs await snorkellers and divers. The island's interior holds dense tropical forest where hiking trails reveal rare bird species. On the mainland, Langkowala Waterfall cascades over multiple mossy rock tiers, surrounded by a clearing ideal for picnics. The former gold-panning villages along the Bombana and Poleang rivers offer a unique scene, while local fishing thrives in the bays opening towards the Banda Sea.
Culture and Cuisine
Tolaki culture is central here: the lulo ngganda traditional dance and the kalo sara (a sacred honour symbol) are at the heart of community life. Local cuisine is built around seafood – sinonggi (a sago-based staple served with fish sauce) is the region's signature dish. Markets sell fresh coconut milk, local honey and spices.
Public Safety
Bombana is a fundamentally safe region and locals are friendly towards visitors. You can walk around the small towns of Rumbia and Poleang at night without worry, though street lighting is patchy. Safety on Kabaena Island is excellent, but ferry services are weather-dependent – avoid boats during storms. Occasional tensions can arise around land ownership in former gold-mining areas, so visit those spots with a local guide. Serious medical care is available in Kendari, roughly 4–5 hours by car.
Practical Information
From Kendari (the provincial capital), the drive southeast takes approximately 4–5 hours. Regular ferries to Kabaena Island depart from Kasipute harbour. The best time to visit is the dry season from May to October, when sea travel is also more reliable. Accommodation is simple: local guesthouses (penginapan) and a handful of homestays on Kabaena.
