Empat Lawang – Highland Coffee Plantations and Waterfalls in South Sumatra
Empat Lawang Regency lies in the highlands of South Sumatra province, on the eastern slopes of the Barisan mountain range. The regional capital is Tebing Tinggi. The region sits on the Bukit Barisan highland plateau with fertile coffee and tea plantations, waterfalls and a cool climate – one of South Sumatra's most scenic highland areas.
Attractions and Activities
Curug Embun (Embun Waterfall) and Curug Tinggi are the region's most beautiful waterfalls – amid lush tropical vegetation, reachable by short hikes. Robusta coffee plantations can be visited – local kopi Empat Lawang is an increasingly renowned Indonesian speciality. Rice terraces and hills around Tebing Tinggi town offer scenic walks. Pasemah megalithic culture remains (stone statues, dolmens) can be found at several points throughout the region.
Culture and Cuisine
Pasemah and Lintang people's culture characterises the region. Traditional rumah limas (pyramid-roofed houses) and sedekah rame communal celebrations are part of local identity. The cuisine is South Sumatran: pindang (sour fish broth), mie celor (egg noodle broth), and the coffee ritual (kopi tubruk – ground coffee steeped in hot water) are part of daily life.
Public Safety
Empat Lawang is a safe rural region. Drive carefully on highland roads – hairpin bends and slippery surfaces in rainy weather. Waterfall hikes are safer with a local guide. Medical care is basic; Lahat or Pagaralam (approx. 1–2 hours) has the nearest larger hospital.

From Palembang Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Airport, approximately 5–6 hours south-west by car. The best time to visit is May to September. Accommodation: simple guesthouses in Tebing Tinggi.
