The Indonesian Wikipedia entry for the district records that Air Kumbang was created in 2012 through pemekaran from Banyuasin I and Rambutan under Perda Kabupaten Banyuasin No. 10 of 2012. It covers 328.56 km² and comprises sixteen villages, with its government centre at Desa Cinta Manis Baru, about 85 km east of the regency capital Pangkalan Balai.
