Maros – Bantimurung Butterfly Paradise and Karst Caves
Maros Regency lies in the central part of South Sulawesi province, north of Makassar city. Its capital is Maros city. The region is known for Bantimurung Bulusaraung National Park – which Alfred Russel Wallace called “the kingdom of butterflies.”

Bantimurung Bulusaraung National Park features karst rock towers, caves and waterfalls. Bantimurung Waterfall and butterfly park is home to hundreds of butterfly species. Leang-Leang caves contain 40,000-year-old rock paintings – among the world’s oldest known figurative cave art. Rammang-Rammang karst landscape offers boat tours among scenic limestone cliffs.

Bugis and Makassar culture are defining. Cuisine is Sulawesi: coto Makassar (beef offal soup), pallubasa, konro (spiced beef ribs), and pisang epe (grilled banana).
