Luwu Utara – Bone Gulf’s Northern Coast and Gateway to Tana Toraja
Luwu Utara Regency lies in the northern part of South Sulawesi province, on the Bone Gulf coast. Its capital is Masamba. The region is the eastern gateway to the Tana Toraja highlands and an important centre of cocoa production.
Attractions and Activities
Sarambu Assing Waterfall is a natural waterfall in a green forested setting. The Bone Gulf coast features fishing villages and mangroves. Visiting cocoa plantations provides insight into the region’s economy. Highland landscapes around Masamba are suitable for hiking, and the route towards Rantepao (Tana Toraja) is scenic.
Culture and Cuisine
A meeting point of Bugis and Torajan culture. Traditional houses and ceremonies of local communities can be experienced. Cuisine is Sulawesi: kapurung, ikan bakar, pallubasa and local cocoa products.
