Luwu Timur – Lake Matano and the Malili Lakes Natural Wonders
Luwu Timur Regency lies in the easternmost part of South Sulawesi province. Its capital is Malili. The region is home to the Malili lake system (Danau Matano, Mahalona, Towuti) – a natural treasure with unique endemic wildlife.
Attractions and Activities
Danau Matano is Sulawesi’s deepest lake (590 m deep) and one of the world’s deepest lakes: crystal-clear water, endemic fish species and snails – of outstanding importance for biological research. Danau Towuti is Sulawesi’s largest lake – boating, fishing and nature walks. The Malili River and the three lakes’ connecting water system are a natural beauty. Sorowako mining town (PT Vale Indonesia nickel mine) is an industrial town on Lake Matano’s shore.
Culture and Cuisine
The local population is a mix of Bugis, Torajan and transmigrants. Cuisine is Sulawesi: ikan bakar (grilled fish from the lakes), kapurung, pallumara (spiced fish soup).

Luwu Timur is a safe region. Travel to the lakes is recommended with a local guide. Medical care: basic hospitals in Malili and Sorowako; Makassar (approx. 10 hours) has more advanced facilities.

From Makassar Sultan Hasanuddin Airport, approximately 10 hours by car. Limited flights to Sorowako small airport. The best time to visit is April to October. Accommodation: hotels in Sorowako; guesthouses in Malili.
