Kepulauan Selayar – Takabonerate Atoll and Diving at South Sulawesi's Southern Tip

Kepulauan Selayar (Selayar Islands) Regency lies in the southernmost part of South Sulawesi province, on the Flores Sea coast. The regional capital is Benteng (Selayar Island). The Selayar Islands' main attraction is Takabonerate National Park – the world's third-largest atoll and an outstanding dive site.

Takabonerate National Park (Taman Nasional Takabonerate) is the world's third-largest atoll: pristine coral reefs, turtles, sharks and rich marine life – world-class diving and snorkelling. Selayar Island beaches are white-sand and quiet. The Gong Nekara – a Bronze Age Dong Son-type bronze gong – is the region's historical heritage. Bugis phinisi boat-building originates from the neighbouring region, but maritime culture is also alive here.

Selayar culture blends Bugis and Makassarese traditions – maritime culture and sailing are part of daily life. Cuisine is seafood-based: ikan bakar (grilled fish), coto Makassar (beef offal soup), pallubasa, and fresh seafood are local flavours.

Public Safety

The Selayar Islands are safe. The sea crossing to the Takabonerate atoll is long – use reliable operators. Diving experience is required. Medical care is basic; Makassar (approx. 1 hour by flight) has the nearest more advanced hospital.

Practical Information

Selayar H. Aroeppala Airport receives flights from Makassar (approx. 1 hour). By boat from Makassar or Bulukumba harbour. The best diving season is March to November. Accommodation: guesthouses and bungalows in Benteng; basic accommodation at Takabonerate.

2. Tongkonan Houses

Tongkonan are traditional houses of Toraja noble families, with distinctive boat-shaped roofs and horn-like decorations. Kete Kesu and Lemo villages are the best places to see them. Lemo's cliff graves hold the dead in wooden effigies (tau-tau).

3. Makassar – Historic Port City

Makassar (formerly Ujung Pandang) is a historically significant port city. Fort Rotterdam, a 17th-century Dutch fort, is the city's symbol. Losari Beach promenade and local gastronomy – coto makassar, konro, pisang epe – are must-tries.

4. Bugis Seafaring Culture

The Bugis people are famous for their shipbuilding and seafaring skills. Phinisi sailing boats are masterpieces of traditional craft. Bira Beach and Tanah Beru village are phinisi building centers.

5. Bantimurung Waterfalls

Bantimurung-Bulusaraung National Park's waterfalls and caves are popular excursion spots. The park is known as the "Kingdom of Butterflies" – many endemic butterfly species live here.

May–September is the dry season. Rambu Solo ceremonies typically take place in July–August and December – check exact dates locally.
