The region is the birthplace of the world-famous pinisi ships – these massive wooden sailing vessels are built by Bugis shipwrights following centuries-old tradition, without modern blueprints, entirely by hand. Tanjung Bira peninsula's white-sand beaches are among Sulawesi's most popular coastal destinations.

Tanah Beru and Bira Shipyards (Desa Tanah Beru) are living workshops of pinisi boat-building: watch master craftsmen hand-carve ribs and fit oak planks. Tanjung Bira beach, with its curved white sand and crystal-clear water, is perfect for swimming and sunbathing. Nearby Liukang Islands (Pulau Liukang, Pulau Kambing) are reachable by boat, offering excellent snorkelling and coral reefs. Apparalang cliff is a dramatic rocky lookout jutting over the sea. Kasuso Waterfall cascades through tropical jungle inland.

Culture and Cuisine

Bugis maritime culture is the foundation of Bulukumba's identity: pinisi boat-building is a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage nominee. Local cuisine is sea-based – pallubasa (spiced beef soup Makassar-style), ikan bakar rica-rica (chilli-grilled fish), and pisang epe (grilled banana with palm sugar) are signature dishes. Local markets sell dried fish, seaweed and Bugis woven textiles.

Public Safety

Bulukumba is a safe, welcoming region. You can move around Tanjung Bira and villages freely at night. Watch for currents on the beach, especially on the eastern side of Bira cape. Only use reliable boat operators for island trips and check the weather. The nearest hospital is in Bulukumba town; for more serious care, Makassar is approximately 5 hours by car.

Practical Information

From Makassar Sultan Hasanuddin Airport, the drive south takes approximately 5–6 hours. The best time to visit is April to October during the dry season. Accommodation at Tanjung Bira ranges from simple beachfront bungalows to mid-range resorts.

1. Tana Toraja – Unique Funeral Rites

Tana Toraja is home to the Toraja people, famous worldwide for their unique funeral ceremonies. Rambu Solo ceremonies last several days, with buffalo fights, traditional dances, and honoring the dead. The ceremonies are central to Toraja belief.

2. Tongkonan Houses

Tongkonan are traditional houses of Toraja noble families, with distinctive boat-shaped roofs and horn-like decorations. Kete Kesu and Lemo villages are the best places to see them. Lemo's cliff graves hold the dead in wooden effigies (tau-tau).

3. Makassar – Historic Port City

Makassar (formerly Ujung Pandang) is a historically significant port city. Fort Rotterdam, a 17th-century Dutch fort, is the city's symbol. Losari Beach promenade and local gastronomy – coto makassar, konro, pisang epe – are must-tries.

4. Bugis Seafaring Culture

The Bugis people are famous for their shipbuilding and seafaring skills. Phinisi sailing boats are masterpieces of traditional craft. Bira Beach and Tanah Beru village are phinisi building centers.

5. Bantimurung Waterfalls

Bantimurung-Bulusaraung National Park's waterfalls and caves are popular excursion spots. The park is known as the "Kingdom of Butterflies" – many endemic butterfly species live here.
