Bone – Ancient Land of the Bugis Seafarers in South Sulawesi

Bone Regency stretches along the eastern coast of South Sulawesi province, bordering Bone Bay. The regional capital is Watampone (often simply called Bone). The area was once the centre of the powerful Bone Sultanate, whose Bugis seafaring-trader people were renowned across the Malay Archipelago. Today Bone draws visitors with its historical heritage, coastal nature and living Bugis culture.

Attractions and Activities

The Bone Sultanate Museum (Museum La Pawawoi) displays royal relics and Bugis history. Along the Bone Bay shore, Tanjung Palette beach is a popular weekend getaway with calm waters and coral reefs close to shore. Mampu Forest (Hutan Mampu) is a community forestry model where teak plantations and natural forest coexist in harmony – eco-tourism walks are available. At Bajoe harbour you can watch the construction of traditional pinisi ships, a Bugis boat-building craft still practised today. The Goa Jepang (Japanese caves) preserve traces of World War II military history.

Culture and Cuisine

Bugis culture forms the foundation of Bone's identity: the lontara script, bissu (traditional spiritual leader) ceremonies and elaborate wedding customs remain alive. Local cuisine features pallubasa (spicy beef broth), bolu peca (sweet pancake), and various preparations of bandeng (milkfish). Fresh fish and prawns from Bone Bay dominate the local markets.

Public Safety

Bone is a safe region; you can walk around Watampone's town centre at night without concern. Coastal areas and fishing harbours have less lighting at night, but crime levels are low. Women can travel solo safely and the Bugis community's hospitality is outstanding. On the Bajoe–Kolaka ferry, watch your valuables on the crowded boat. Medical care is basic locally; the nearest major hospital is in Makassar, approximately 3–4 hours by car.

Practical Information

From Makassar (Sultan Hasanuddin Airport), the drive east along the A2 road takes approximately 3–4 hours. Ferries depart from Bajoe harbour to Kolaka (Southeast Sulawesi). The best time to visit is the dry season from May to October. Accommodation in Watampone includes simple hotels and guesthouses.

1. Tana Toraja – Unique Funeral Rites

Tana Toraja is home to the Toraja people, famous worldwide for their unique funeral ceremonies. Rambu Solo ceremonies last several days, with buffalo fights, traditional dances, and honoring the dead. The ceremonies are central to Toraja belief.

2. Tongkonan Houses

Tongkonan are traditional houses of Toraja noble families, with distinctive boat-shaped roofs and horn-like decorations. Kete Kesu and Lemo villages are the best places to see them. Lemo's cliff graves hold the dead in wooden effigies (tau-tau).

3. Makassar – Historic Port City

Makassar (formerly Ujung Pandang) is a historically significant port city. Fort Rotterdam, a 17th-century Dutch fort, is the city's symbol. Losari Beach promenade and local gastronomy – coto makassar, konro, pisang epe – are must-tries.

4. Bugis Seafaring Culture

The Bugis people are famous for their shipbuilding and seafaring skills. Phinisi sailing boats are masterpieces of traditional craft. Bira Beach and Tanah Beru village are phinisi building centers.

5. Bantimurung Waterfalls

Bantimurung-Bulusaraung National Park's waterfalls and caves are popular excursion spots. The park is known as the "Kingdom of Butterflies" – many endemic butterfly species live here.
