Hulu Sungai Utara – Floating Markets and Wetland Life in South Kalimantan
Hulu Sungai Utara Regency lies in the northern part of South Kalimantan province, in the wetlands of the Negara and Balangan rivers. The regional capital is Amuntai. The region is one of the most characteristic areas of Banjar wetland culture: floating markets, wetland duck and buffalo farming, and traditional riverside lifestyles define it.
Attractions and Activities
Amuntai and surrounding floating markets (pasar terapung) are traditional forms of Banjar wetland trade – boats sell fresh vegetables, fish and local products on the river. The duck and buffalo-farming wetlands (rawa) create a distinctive landscape – local farming can be observed. Amuntai Grand Mosque (Masjid Agung Amuntai) is built in Banjar architectural style. Riverside boat tours showcase the wetlands' wildlife.
Culture and Cuisine
Banjar wetland culture is tied to the river: the jukung (traditional boat) is the everyday means of transport. Local handicrafts (rattan weaving, Banjar textiles) and madihin poetry are living traditions. Cuisine is Banjar-style: soto Banjar, itik (duck) dishes, nasi kuning, and wadai (sweet Banjar cakes) are local favourites.

Hulu Sungai Utara is a safe region. On the wetlands, boat transport is the only option – use reliable local operators. In rainy season, floods can inundate the wetlands. Medical care is basic; Banjarmasin (approx. 3 hours) has the nearest more advanced hospital.
