Attractions and Activities

Barabai Market (Pasar Barabai) is the region's commercial centre – local gemstones, Banjar woven textiles and fresh produce. Pagat Cave and Pagat Hot Springs are a natural cave system with warm-water springs – suitable for both relaxation and exploration. Rubber and coffee plantations at the Meratus foothills can be visited. Local mosque architecture (Banjar style) is noteworthy.

Culture and Cuisine

Banjar culture has Islamic roots with a strong trading tradition. Traditional Banjar wedding ceremonies (baantar jujuran) and madihin (rhythmic oral poetry) are local traditions. Cuisine is Banjar-style: soto Banjar (chicken broth with spiced coconut milk), ketupat kandangan (rice-block fish), nasi kuning (yellow spiced rice), and wadai (Banjar cakes) are local favourites.

Hulu Sungai Tengah is a safe region. Rocks at Pagat Cave and hot springs can be slippery. Medical care: basic hospital in Barabai; Banjarmasin (approx. 2.5 hours) has the nearest more advanced hospital.

From Banjarmasin Syamsudin Noor Airport, approximately 2.5 hours east by car. The best time to visit is May to September. Accommodation: simple hotels and guesthouses in Barabai.

3. Meratus Mountains

The Meratus Mountains are South Kalimantan's green lung. Dayak Bukit communities live here, and the range's trekking trails, waterfalls, and cooler climate provide a pleasant escape from the hot coast.

4. Diamond Mining and Martapura

Martapura is famous for diamond and gemstone processing. Local markets and workshops let you observe the processing. The Cempaka diamond mine is a unique attraction.

5. Banjar Culture

Banjar people's culture – traditional houses, sasirangan textiles, gastronomy – is the soul of South Kalimantan. Soto banjar and ketupat kandangan are local specialties.

May–September is the dry season, ideal for river tours and mountain excursions. Floating markets are visitable year-round.
