Mandailing Natal – Mandailing Coffee and Natal Coast in North Sumatra
Mandailing Natal Regency lies in the southernmost part of North Sumatra province, between the Bukit Barisan mountain range and the Indian Ocean coast. Its capital is Panyabungan. The region is the birthplace of world-famous Mandailing coffee.
Attractions and Activities
Sorik Marapi volcano (2,145 m) is an active volcano of the Bukit Barisan range – hot springs on its slopes. Natal’s coastline on the Indian Ocean features white-sand beaches and surfing opportunities. Mandailing coffee plantations can be visited – Mandailing coffee (arabica) is sought after worldwide. Tor Sibohi nature reserve is home to Sumatran orangutans.
Culture and Cuisine
Mandailing Batak culture is defining: strong Islamic tradition (this Batak branch is Muslim). Gordang sambilan (ensemble of nine drums) is part of traditional music. Cuisine is Batak-Mandailing: arsik (spiced carp stew), holat (dried meat), and Mandailing kopi.

Mandailing Natal is a safe rural region. Highland road conditions vary. Medical care: hospital in Panyabungan; Padangsidempuan (approx. 2 hours) or Medan (approx. 10 hours) have more advanced facilities.

From Medan Kualanamu Airport, approximately 10 hours south by car. From Padangsidempuan, approximately 2 hours. The best time to visit is May to September. Accommodation: simple hotels in Panyabungan.
