Labuhan Batu Utara – Foothill Country and Plantations in North Sumatra
Labuhan Batu Utara Regency lies in the eastern part of North Sumatra province, stretching from the Bukit Barisan foothills to the Malacca Strait plain. Its capital is Aek Kanopan. Split from Labuhan Batu in 2008, the regency is a region of palm oil industry and foothill agriculture.
Attractions and Activities
Hiking and nature walks are possible on the green hills of the Barisan foothills. Waterfalls on highland streams in the NA IX-X area can be reached with a local guide. Visiting palm oil plantations provides insight into the region’s economic life. Aek Kanopan weekly market offers local products.

The population is a mix of Batak (Mandailing, Toba) and Malay. Cuisine is Sumatran: arsik (spiced fish), saksang (spiced meat dish), gulai and local fruits. Coffee production is significant in the foothills.
